Breathing new life into Heritage Interpretation
Wed, Jun 1 and Thurs, June 2, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM PDT
In this 7-hour course (two sessions of 3.5 hours each on June 1 and 2) we will explore the 10 best practices for history and commemoration, including crafting big stories, giving Indigenous peoples an opportunity to share their history on their own terms, sharing authority, and exploring the spectrum of powerful memories and meanings attached to heritage places, to name a few!
Then we will inspect the principles of holistic inspiration-based interpretation, including the need to keep entry points to inspiration in mind and consider what inspires people and what they could be inspired to do after.
And finally, we will look at how we could put the two models together to create magic! Together these models will help us breathe new life into heritage interpretation to increase meaningful visitor engagement with history and themselves at heritage places.
Consider setting up a 3-hour custom session as a follow up to this course. At that time we will apply the ideas to your context and I will help you plan some site-specific programs that are based on the magic of the two models.
Certificate of completion provided after.
